Arcade Game: Bloodrunner (Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows, Linux and Mac.)

Cross platform game: Bloodrunner for Android, IOS, Linux & Windows.

I have recently completed a work related MySQL course with a view to completing another certification. Interestingly, whilst on the course the instructor, Freelance Web Developer Gary Rigg, mentioned aside from the usual and varied web and mobile application work he does on a Freelance basis, he has developed a number of games including Ninja vs Aliens, Pabland and my personal favourite (and I get the impression his), Bloodrunner – an Arcade Game for Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows, Linux and Mac. Surprisingly, it’s not had that many downloads (within 50 – 100), which when you view and play the game is very surprising. Continue reading

Wordpress plug-ins
I’ve been using WordPress more and more recently as it’s an ideal platform to speed up development of sites with the additional benefit of it being a well respected CMS and allows the site owner to update content through the interface with no knowledge required of HTML. There’s an abundance of available themes and some great ones which are free with a one click install. Even better and more importantly it’s simple.

Anyway, I’ve always dabbled with WordPress and had an interest in it. There are alternatives in Drupal, Joomla and of course custom builds but WordPress is adequate for most requirements. These days I’m trying to get a better understanding of how the platform works in it’s life cycle as more jobs require some knowledge of it. I often use the available plug-ins with my install but haven’t really dabbled until now with their inner workings. Anyway, having got a fundamental understanding of them recently and realised how useful some plug-ins can be I decided to write a few very simple ones of my own, just to get me started. Easily creating image placeholders for a website mockup.

Easily creating image placeholders for a website mockup.

I read a post the other day explaining the process of creating websites from scratch, which concentrated mostly on the initial stages, from the initial client enquiry and request and obvious individual requirements they may have, to actually wire framing and finally to an HTML and CSS mock up in order to get client approval and naturally know you’re on the right track to continue.

The post was explaining mostly during the mock up stage, you may not have the images you’ll be using and suggested easily generating and altering placeholders for the images in the code itself. The ability is courtesy of fakeimg.pl and is very simple. Not only can you create an image, sized to your choosing, you’re also able to dictate the background colour (this must be declared in hexadecimal) and include some text on the image also. I suppose this would be good to describe proposed content and will give you a better idea of how the layout will eventually look. Continue reading

CSS3 selector – ::selection{}

CSS3 selector – ::selection{}

There are some great new features in the up and coming CSS3 spec – which will be released as modules I believe instead of just a standard. Some are less commonly know than others. Whereas some are only partially supported features as this is but that’s ok we’ll take what we can. We’ll need a vendor prefix also in the style and hope later it gets more support from other vendors. We can do some great things with CSS, one feature is the ::selection, selector. This selector enables you to set the colour of the background of some text on your page when someone highlights it with their mouse, say in order to copy and then paste it somewhere (copyrighters beware) Continue reading
